Conflict Coaching offers support with a conflict or difficulty—whether it involves others or arises within you.
By listening closely, summarising in your own words, and asking exploratory questions, the coach helps you to express yourself, understand the situation more clearly, and sometimes discover new ways forward.
People often say that these meetings spark awareness. You may be looking for a space free from advice, assessment, or problem-solving.
I bring a calm, measured presence to conflict coaching. The people I have worked with have noted how this helps them see things in perspective and to let go of the ‘noise’ that may be in or around them. Over the years I have offered conflict coaching I have come to value ‘trusting the process’- allowing new understanding or direction to emerge.
Working Together
I meet clients in person in Newcastle-upon-Tyne or online, primarily using Zoom. Sessions usually last one hour. I offer them on a sliding scale of £40-80 per session, to help keep this support available to more people.
My path to conflict coaching has been somewhat circuitous. I began working life as a litigation solicitor, but in 2002, alongside my legal work, I qualified in community mediation and volunteered with a local service. Later training in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and, in 2015, updating my skills with CAOS Conflict Management refined my approach.
I keep this balance between professional and community work- including weekly shifts as an emergency department support volunteer, and other regular commitments. These roles often provide a valuable sense of perspective.

"Alan Sharland has written a vital book on bullying. His approach is the way forward. Instead of focusing on 'proving it', which takes us in the direction of investigations and hearings that go no where and only serve to exacerbate an already sensitive situation, he shows the way forward through direct communication and a focus on the behavior that is of concern."
