Workplace Conflict Management Training

CAOS provides a wide range of workplace conflict management training options.

All CAOS Conflict Management training is bespoke, designed to meet the particular needs of the intended participants. This will usually mean we have had some level of communication with participants before any session is provided to ask them what experiences, concerns, difficulties etc. they would like to explore in the sessions.

All of our training is experiential and interactive, involving group work, pair work, individual reflection, role plays, sometimes games and occasionally exploration of attendees' experiences through art based activities.

Some examples of workplace conflict management training workshops we have provided include:

Dealing with Difficult Behaviour - for helping professionals

This workshop looks at behaviours experienced by helping professionals such as charity workers, health professionals, teachers etc. that they find difficult to manage. All CAOS workshops draw upon the experiences of mediation practice which is a process designed to support effective communication and creative thinking.

One of the difficulties faced by helping professionals can be a sense of ever increasing dependence by clients on the professional and the difficulties that can arise when the expectations of the client cannot be met by the professional. This can often be due to professionals being unclear about the boundaries to their role, and, as a consequence, being unable to assert those boundaries, such that neither the client nor the professional are clear about what each is/ should be responsible in their working relationship.

An opportunity to reflect on where the boundaries lie and how to establish these is provided in the workshop, as well as a chance to practice communication skills that assert these boundaries.

Managing Conflict in Teams - for Managers and people working with groups

This has usually formed a series of 3 workshops - 1 full-day and 2 half-day follow up review and support sessions.

The workshop introduces principles of effective communication and conflict resolution that underpin the practice of mediation by CAOS Mediators and explores their use in the management of conflict within teams.

Effective communication skills are practiced via exercises and role plays and the idea of 'mindful' communication forms part of the theme of the workshops whereby we become more conscious of how we say things and what the potential impact can be for ourselves and others in communicating as we do.

Participants bring their experiences of difficulties that they have had in managing team members or of being members of teams or groups which have had unresolved conflicts.

These are reflected on in the light of the principles introduced as described above and the communication skills practiced and an opportunity is provided to consider and practice alternative ways of responding to the difficulties.

The follow-up sessions allow an opportunity to discuss how these situations developed and to be supported in continuing to respond more effectively to them.

Managing Difficult Conversations with Constituents - for Local Councillors

This was a half-day workshop for Councillors of a west London Borough to help them manage difficult conversations more effectively. The main focus was on communication skills practice but the Principles of Effective Communication and Conflict Resolution that underpin CAOS mediation practice were also touched on to help explain the thinking behind the communication skills practiced in the session.

This is what people say about CAOS training...

"In my 20 years experience as an academic this is the best ‘in-service’ training I have experienced. The quality of the training team’s preparation and the skill with which they conducted the course was impressive."

Dr Meretta Elliott -Senior Lecturer-School of Arts-Brunel University - speaking about a 6-day Mediator training course run by Alan Sharland and colleagues.

"This was not an easy course; the challenges involved in working outside one’s usual mode of operation were considerable, but the upbeat attitude of the trainers and the calm and supportive atmosphere they created meant that I was free to work outside my comfort zone in developing an approach to assisting others deal with their own situations."

Dr Mary Richards - Subject Leader for Drama - Brunel University - also speaking about the Mediator training course.

"This was a very successful workshop, feedback described the day as “fun”, “interesting” and “informative” with a “superb” trainer who had a “very thoughtful approach”. 100% of our attendees said they had enjoyed the course and they would recommend it to colleagues."

Tania Murrell - Business Development Manager, Hillingdon Association of Voluntary Services - speaking about the workshop 'Dealing with Difficult Behaviour' run by Alan Sharland.

Train to be a Mediator with CAOS Conflict Management

"Alan provided excellent training for mediators at Common Ground Mediation which was challenging but also thoroughly enjoyable.

He led us through various interactive exercises to help us reflect on the mediator's role and impartiality. I would highly recommend Alan as a trainer for mediators."
