About conflict coaching
Unresolved conflict can take a huge toll on our physical and mental wellbeing, on our relationships, and on our economic stability. But it can be difficult to talk about, and when we do, the experience is often disheartening. With ever-increasing demands on others’ time and capacity to really pay attention, it can be challenging to find someone to really listen, particularly when we need to return to the same subject because we feel stuck.
In these circumstances, reaction and advice can come across as criticism, judgement or misunderstanding, no matter how well-intentioned it is. Oftentimes talking to others can feel like a version of the BBC Radio 4 panel game ‘Just a Minute’, in which panelists may speak for a minute on a given topic, but will be continually interrupted if they hesitate, deviate or repeat themselves.
Conflict coaching follows a very different path.
It provides an experience of deep, attentive listening, in which you are free to explore what concerns you, without constraint, direction, interruption or advice.
The starting point of conflict coaching is that we each already hold in ourselves the expertise and knowledge that we need in order to change the conflicts we struggle with.
This is true whether these are apparently intractable disagreements with others, or inner dilemmas that seem insoluble. A conflict coaching session entails empathetic and impartial listening, reflection and enquiry to help you discover new insights and find novel ways forward.
About me
I originally came to conflict coaching through my mentorship of writers, after finding that the creative and professional challenges of writing are often to do with the unresolved inner dilemmas or interpersonal disagreements that we all face.
My facilitative approach is informed by two decades of research and publications on conflicting narratives of identity and belonging, as well as many years of work in Higher Education supporting self-expression and self-empowerment through writing.
Practicalities
Conflict coaching sessions are from 1 to 1.5 hours, and can include up to three sessions. Sessions can be either via Zoom or in person, or a combination of the two.
Session fees:
I offer a sliding scale of £50-£90 per session, plus travel costs for in-person meetings.
I am always happy to discuss alternative fee arrangements if needed.
